While Kentucky may not be as associated with southern plantations as North and South Carolina, the bluegrass state is home to quite a few historical antebellum mansions. These southern Kentucky plantations are an important part of the area's history and now are becoming famous for being unique places to visit and to hold events.
Springhill Winery and Plantation Bed and Breakfast in Bloomfield, Kentucky
This plantation was established in 1857 and encompassed over 1,000 acres. Over the years, the plantation was renovated and today the gardens, winery and bed and breakfast are open to the public. Many visitors come to Springhill Winery and Plantation to spend the night in rooms with amenities such as period antiques and a complimentary breakfast. The owners offer wine tastings and there is a gift shop on site. Couples can also have weddings at the inn and then stay the night for their honeymoon. Another feature the plantation has is themed options such as murder mystery weekend and ghost tours.
Richwood Plantation Bed and Breakfast in Milton, Kentucky
The Richwood Plantation sits near the Ohio River and was built in 1803. Now a gorgeous bed and breakfast, visitors to the plantation can explore the 117 acres that make up the Kentucky plantation. Guests can use the inn for weddings, receptions or decide to spend the night in one of the many rooms. The home has amenities such as an indoor swimming pool and hot tubs. Facilities outside include a riding arena, stables and walking trails. There are even separate cottages on the property for a more secluded stay.
Maple Hill Manor in Springfield, Kentucky
This restored antebellum Kentucky plantation was first owned by Thomas Irvine McElroy but has had several owners throughout the years. The current property, about fifteen acres, is still used as a farm and operated by Todd Allen and Tyler Horton. The home is opened up for weddings, special occasions and other events. Brides and grooms who choose to get married at the inn can use the gazebo, beautiful gardens and have an outdoor or indoor wedding. Some brides even elect to have a carriage ride. There is also a gift shop that features items made at the farm. Some of the packages at Maple Hill Manor include murder mystery weekends, Kentucky Experience and romance packages for couples.
Whether going for the day or for a weekend, it is best to call ahead and make sure the plantation is open. Some plantations have specific events or tours at set times and prefer weddings scheduled in advance.
